There’s a knock on the door and a stomp on the floor,
Four jolly mummers come laughin’ once more:
One’s got a pink bra strapped on her smock,
She’s laughing so hard she can’t even talk!
One plays the fiddle in a striped cardigan,
One’s got a boot and a wool sock grinnin’,
One in red plaid shouts, “Pass the cheer!”
It’s mummerin’ time, the best of the year!
Who are the mummers, nobody knows,
With a sway in their step and a frost on their nose,
Dancin’ and singin’ by the firelight,
Here come the mummers tonight!
Who are the mummers, nobody knows,
With a sway in their step and a frost on their nose,
Dancin’ and singin’ by the firelight,
Here come the mummers tonight!
They’re stompin’ and jiggin’ and clappin’ in time,
Singin’ old carols and makin’ up rhyme,
The kettle is boilin’, the laughter is strong,
The night carries on with a merry old song.
Who are the mummers, nobody knows,
With a sway in their step and a frost on their nose,
Dancin’ and singin’ by the firelight,
Here come the mummers tonight!
Some wear a curtain, some wear a sheet,
Old rubber boots on their muddied-up feet,
With flour-sack faces and voices disguised,
You’ll never guess who they are by the look in thier eyes!
Who are the mummers, nobody knows,
With a sway in their step and a frost on their nose,
Dancin’ and singin’ by the firelight,
Here come the mummers tonight!
They’re stompin’ the floorboards, the whole house shakes,
Laughter is rollin’ with each step they take,
“Drop down the fiddle, strike up the tune,
We’ll mummer ‘til morning or maybe past noon!”
Who are the mummers, nobody knows,
With a sway in their step and a frost on their nose,
Dancin’ and singin’ by the firelight,
Here come the mummers tonight!
When the masks come off, there’s cheers all around,
Old friends and neighbours at last have been found,
With a hug and a smile and a shout of delight,
That’s the mummerin’ spirit in the Newfoundland night!
